WHAT IS THE EQUITY IN COLLECTING PROGRAM?: Equity in Collecting is an artist-led program created by April Bey Studio to expand access to contemporary art collecting for people who have historically faced economic and systemic barriers to participating in the art market. The program emerged from the artist’s recognition that she, along with many of the cultural workers, artists, and community members whose labor, advocacy, and support helped elevate her career, had been priced out of collecting her work. Equity in Collecting was developed as a way to address this disparity by intentionally allocating a selection of experimental and new works to the program and recycling proceeds from sales to support its continued production and accessibility.

Through the program, designated artworks are made available to qualifying collectors at an artist-supported Equity price. Qualifying collectors may also choose to become Sponsoring Collectors by purchasing an Equity work at its full established retail price, helping sustain future rounds of the program.The established retail value of an artwork remains unchanged regardless of the price paid. The Equity price represents an intentional investment by April Bey Studio in making contemporary art collecting more accessible while building a sustainable model of cultural participation and ownership.

MISSION: Equity in Collecting exists to make contemporary art ownership more accessible, build a broader and more representative community of collectors, and create meaningful pathways into collecting for people who have historically been excluded from the art market. The program is designed to make collecting approachable, transparent and sustainable while protecting the value of the artwork and the long term mission of the program. You do not need to already consider yourself an art collector to participate.

WHO QUALIFIES?

Participation in Equity in Collecting is based on self attestation. To participate, you must identify with at least one of the following:

  • Black, African, African American or a member of the African Diaspora

  • A woman of color or person of color

  • LGBTQIA2S+

  • Indigenous, or a descendant of peoples who inhabited the Americas, Pacific, and parts of Asia and Africa prior to European colonization

  • A single parent

  • A person with disabilities

  • A recipient of WIC, SNAP, CalFresh or another state or federal assistance program

  • An emerging artist in any discipline or field

  • An emerging curator

  • A public service employee, including educators and classified staff at state or community colleges, and university or community college art gallery curators

  • A person experiencing another specific form of economic or systemic marginalization not listed above

ABOUT THE ATTESTATION

You will be asked to confirm that you qualify under at least one of the eligibility categories above. Equity in Collecting uses self attestation. You will not be asked to provide documentation proving your identity, income, disability, participation in an assistance program or other qualifying circumstance. April Bey Studio and participating galleries do not determine whether someone is “marginalized enough” to participate. The collector is responsible for truthfully determining whether they meet the program criteria and completing the attestation accordingly.

APRIL BEY STUDIO | TWO TYPES OF COLLECTORS

EQUITY COLLECTOR: Qualifying collectors may purchase designated Equity in Collecting works at the artist supported Equity price listed with the artwork.

SPONSORING COLLECTOR: Sponsoring Collectors meet the same eligibility requirements but choose to purchase their artwork at its full established retail price. These purchases help sustain Equity in Collecting and support future works being made available through the program.

APRIL BEY STUDIO | THREE WAYS TO COLLECT

1. ART FAIR OR GALLERY EXHIBITION

Collect in person through a participating gallery.

  1. View available Equity artworks at the exhibition or art fair.

  2. Scan the QR code with your device to access the Equity in Collecting Attestation Form. This will be available in-person as a printed sign or in an ipad.

  3. Select your artwork and submit the form.

  4. Once complete show the gallery your confirmation and complete your purchase through the gallery.

2. GENERAL EQUITY DROP

Collect during a scheduled Equity release.

  1. Browse the announced collection through April Bey Studio or participating galleries.

  2. Complete the Equity in Collecting Attestation Form during the drop window.

  3. Select your preferred artwork through the attestation form.

  4. Once approved, complete your purchase through the designated gallery or April Bey’s studio.

*Works are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

3. DIRECTLY FROM APRIL BEY STUDIO

Collect from available studio inventory throughout the year.

  1. Visit this website regularly and browse available Equity artworks.

  2. Complete the Equity in Collecting Attestation Form and select the work on the form you desire.

  3. Once approved, receive your invoice and payment instructions.

  4. Complete your purchase directly with April Bey Studio.

*Studio-direct purchases will include special Equity in Collecting packaging.

PLEASE NOTE: All Equity purchases require an approved attestation. Qualifying collectors may choose to pay the artist-supported Equity price or become Sponsoring Collectors by paying full retail price. An artwork's established retail value remains unchanged regardless of the purchase price.
